The reference page datatable with the expanding rows is really slick. How was this implemented?

Just looking through the inline source of the reference page. Looks like the code is in $('#reference tbody tr').live()

Absolutely - the code is just embedded into the page. The reference page is basically an implementation of the method described in this blog post: http://datatables.net/blog/Drill-down_rows :-)
