Is there any built-in support for wildcards / regex in the search query?

Yes. fnFilter - parameter 3 - treat the filtering string as regex or not. Also the oSearch option can control the default filtering.

Thanks for that information. However, I am not able to know where am i supposed to call fnFilter?

I want the regex-search to work as i enter my search criteria.
