Sorting does not work at all

I am using datatables with twitter bootstrap. I followed the instructions in this blog: http://datatables.net/blog/Twitter_Bootstrap_2

I managed to display the table in DataTables format but the sorting of columns does not work. I can see the icons in the headers and when I click on the columns, the icons do change to reflect the sorting (ascending / descending) but the rows are not sorted. In other words, although the icons indicate that the sorting is carried out, the rows themselves are not sorted based on the column clicked.

Is there anything additional that I need to be doing to sort the columns or is this a default in-built functionality with DataTables?
