Has the following statement
"As an example the code below makes use of the numeric comma type detection and sorting functions, saved into two different files for clarity (live example):"

However when you go to http://datatables.net/examples/plug-ins/sorting_plugin.html
if you look at the source the plugins are not saved in two different files for clarity.

I think it would be handy if you made these two files directly available for download.

Thanks for the feedback. The point in not including them in a separate file was that the extra file would require an extra HTTP request - which is slow. And I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up with new developers including a lot of different files that should really be combined.

Having said that, if you want it, all the plug-ins are available as individual files here: https://github.com/DataTables/Plugins/

As a side note... Why not include currency sorting, and detection as standard in the main DataTables script? It seems a significant number of people are going to want that, and they don't seem particularly large scripts?

It is (will be) in v1.10. HTML number type as well. :-)
