Change accommodation, cookie expiration

I need to roll out a change to my table structure (adding a column)
I believe my users will get nasty messages about too many elements because they have cookies referring to the old table format.

How do people deal with this?

ideas:
version the cookies and delete previous versions
really short cookie expiration
cookie "migration"
warning silencing?
