How to re-intialize a table

I have the contents of my table populated based on a value selected from a drop down list. My default sort is on column 1 but if I select another sortable column (say column x) then change the value selected in my drop down box the new data is populated into the table but instead of keeping my default sort of column 1 the table is sorted by column x

I think I need to re-initialize my table based on changing the drop down list but when I do this I get an error about not being able to initialize the data table
