DataTable with 100% width and scrollX but *only* if the table is too big (Foundation)

I have several examples of tables using DataTables where setting ScrollX to true causes a horizontal scroll bar even if the table is small enough to fit on the page. I'm setting the width of the table to 100% via CSS and would love for the table to scroll horizontally if there's overflow. I'm using Foundation and this happens even with the default Foundation styles (also removing margins from the tables so the header isn't spaced apart). Any ideas why this is so hard?
