Improving print visuals of large tables.

I have a web app which is using DataTables to create large tables with a lot of text content and a lot of columns. It's basically being used to create large reports in tabular format. The table visuals on screen aren't too bad but when the report is printed, it doesn't look very nice. Now I realise that a lot of this has to do with there being a lot of columns and content in the table. However, I was wondering if there is a way to improve the look of the printed version. I've tried printing on sizes legal and letter but there is no improvement in the look of the report.
