DataTables 1.9.3 w/ Knockout - performance issues and massive memory usage

I'm a consultant that inherited an application that uses both DataTables 1.9.3 and knockout.js (v 3.0). We're seeing some terrible performance and when I tried to turn on virtual scrolling, it actually crashes IE and Chrome. We're actually seeing IE take up 1.7 gb of memory before it crashes.
I'd love to move to 1.1, but unfortunately that isn't in our short term plans.
I think I've read that 1.9.3 and knockout don't play nice, is there any modifications I can make to 1.9.3 to improve performance with knockout?
