Help with filtering datatable

I read in the docs that the filter() function returns a new API instance. I would like to know, is it possible to filter the existing datatable, and if not, how would I replace the current data with the filtered data?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Never mind; I figured out that his can be done with the search() function. I just didn't realise that it also serves as a filter.
