Digit group separators

This seems like a great plugin, but one of the blind-spots it has is the inability to recognise one of the most basic things about numerical data: the use of commas as digit group separators (e.g. 1,500,000).
I've tried using the Formatted Numbers fix (http://datatables.net/plug-ins/sorting#formatted_numbers) but that only serves to break sorting for columns that don't have digit group separators. In the same table, there are data entries with percentage symbols and plain text: these columns cease to be sortable once I use the formatted numbers plugin).
There are myriad plugins that are far more basic and lacking in features than DataTables, which don't require any meddling in order to try to get digit group separators to work. In fact, DataTables is one of the only plugins I've seen that does not recognise separators. If other plugins can do it, then it may be worth considering resolving this for DataTables in future.
