bug in datatables 1.7.5?

IE8 and FF 3.6 give the following error:

json is null line 3319

I'm using the zero initialization code example given in the examples section.

What gives?

some missing info:

I copied the zero initialization code into a standalone js file and including that file in the html. If i copy the js code directly into the html (as the example in this website shows) there is no error.

So what is wrong if i put this in a standalone file?
