Fixed Header in an iframe possible?

I need to have a fixed header like datatables can do but within an iframe. I'm starting to think that without the parent/child talking to each other via some sort of tunneling(assuming cross domain is not an issue) that this isn't possible. The iframe will not be aware the parent window is scrolling and will not "fix" the header appropriately. Is my thinking correct on this one?
