Sort First Column ONLY in Variable Column Table

I have a table generated by PHP which generates a variable number of columns. I want to restrict sorting to the first column only, which holds the descriptions for each row of data. Sorting is not required for the 2nd through nth columns. Please advise the best way to do this.
