Sorting dates with ranges in them

Hello.
Has anyone found if it's possible to sort based on date when there is a range in the date?

For example
"May 1, 2011 - June 1, 2011"

Ideally it would sort as if it was "May 1, 2011" and ignore the "- June 1, 2011" part.

I'm using datatables 1.7.1 and it doesn't seem to work.
