Update table, then filter - not working!

I am using this wonderful plugin - version 1.7.6 - in an electronic submission of manuscripts for a Journal. For this, one of the tables is a list of submissions, which for ease of use, I have added some custom filters to show particular submissions only depending on their current status.
Of course, this status gets updated depending on the user's interactions, in real-time.
My problem lies in that despite using fnUpdate, or a custom version of fnDataUpdate, I still cannot get the filters to work appropriately - they still work on the initial dataset.
This can actuially be replicated in the example on this site for the jEditable plugin. If you change an entry, then try to filter the results, it will not work appropriately. I changed one of the Firefox enbtries to Firefox 5, then trid filtering for it, and it does not work.
Any help is appreciated, as I am currently stuck, and do not wish to re-invent the wheel by making my own version of DataTables!
