Change placement of plus sign

The default for responsive is a nice blue plus button on the first column. I have been trying to put clickable icons on the first column but, this interferes with their behavior. What are my options?
Can I dynamically add a column to host the plus sign?
Move the responsive plus column to the last column?

Advice and a hint as to how to accomplish would be greatly appreciated.
