Indeed there is - this is actually the default behaviour with the jQuery UI theming, simply because it looks better... I think I made a mistake not putting that in originally. So what you can do, if you don't want to use jQuery UI theming, is to set custom classes for the disabled classes: http://datatables.net/styling/custom_classes . sPageButtonStaticDisabled is the one you are looking for I think.
