Modify show details

I'm trying to create a table where hidden details can be shown at the click of a button, like in the example: http://www.datatables.net/release-datatables/examples/api/row_details.html

The problem I am encountering is that the details I want to show should be lined up with the existing columns. I have tried using a nested table but I cannot get the columns to line up across different browsers. I would like be able to add my own set of table division tags to the table row that is created instead of adding to a pre-made table division that spans the whole table.
